Our Classes
Morningside Montessori School houses two bright, comfortable offices and three sunny, fully-equipped classrooms that house our various programs.
North MWF Class
Our North Class meets 3 days a week (Mornings: Monday/Wednesday/ Friday) for 15 two- and three-year-olds.
The program is founded on Montessori principles which include design of the classroom, the teacher as a facilitator and extended work periods. We employ traditional Montessori materials, modern educational materials and some teacher made materials. They include: Sensorial materials, to incite the senses; Practical Life materials to refine fine motor skills; Language activities to develop letter/sound recognition; Math materials to learn counting, ordination and beginning addition/subtraction. The program also contains an abundance of manipulatives, such as blocks; art activities, painting, collaging, and drawing; science projects, watching caterpillars turn into butterflies; a wealth of books and a very cozy loft, which acts as an area for fantasy play and dress-up activities.
Also, any younger children (under four) who need an Extended Day option use this classroom in the afternoons as a nap room (1:30-3:00) and may stay for a longer day as part of our Afterschool Center.

Our program highlights the importance of peer relationships and the time needed to understand social negotiations. Our educators facilitate children find their interests and pursue them through extended work time and over multiple exposures to that learner. We weave together following a child’s interest with core NYS Standards in preparing children for Kindergarten to be lifelong pursuers of knowledge.

Explorers Class
Our Explorer’s Class is an afternoon enrichment program for our students who attend the 5 day am program. It is designed for children who might need a longer day and additional academic challenges. The routine of the Explorers’ class adheres to a more typical kindergarten format and therefore guides your child as s/he completes his/her last year of preschool and begins the transition into Kindergarten.
The daily structure includes a whole group lesson, table work and after an independent work time, children gather on the rug to review the lesson of the day. The expectations of this classroom are such that children must be four years old in order to enroll in this class. Generally the class studies specific themes for a short period of time. We incorporate a multidisciplinary curriculum within the Explorers Class so that the children explore a specific theme in different ways.
The curriculum incorporates math, language, science, cooking, arts & crafts, music, movement and geography activities that are geared toward children who will be moving up to Kindergarten next year. These activities are stimulating and fun for the children, but the standards of attention and independence are greater than those in our regular 5 day programs.
